The IBHS FORTIFIED Home standards offer different tiers of protection. While both levels exceed standard building codes, the Silver level introduces several critical structural upgrades over the Bronze level to provide higher wind and water resistance.
The primary differences between the Bronze and Silver levels include:
- Wind Speed Resistance: The Bronze level is designed to resist winds up to 130 mph, whereas the Silver level increases that protection to 150 mph.
- Roof Deck Attachment: A Bronze roof requires 6 nails per shingle. The Silver level requires a stronger attachment of 8 nails per shingle.
- Sealed Roof Deck: This is one of the most significant upgrades. A sealed roof deck is not required for the Bronze designation, but it is required for the Silver level. This upgrade prevents water intrusion into the home even if the outer shingles are lost during a storm.
- Reinforced Roof Edges: While Bronze provides basic reinforcement for roof edges, the Silver level requires enhanced reinforcement to further protect the roof’s perimeter from high winds.
